5 fantastic days out with children while at Swiss Cottage ...

A day in Dartmouth.  Take a boat trip up the Dart River to Dittisham for crabbing, or further up river to Totnes and then take the South Devon Steam railway back to Dartmouth - great fun! You might also enjoy a trip to the castle at the mouth of the river, or spend a few hours at Woodlands Leisure park - the largest theme park in the south west (www.woodlandspark.com and book on-line to save 20%).

Dartmoor. Here you have a choice of wonderful outdoor places to explore, the terrain on Dartmoor is surprisingly gentle and well suited to walks with children. The river at Dartmeet is good for catching 'tiddlers' and splashing about in.

3

National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth. The UKs largest aquarium is within 40 minute drive from Swiss Cottage. Visit www.national-aquarium.co.uk for latest information. On the way home you could call in at the Riverford organic shop at Yealmpton with it's fantastic cafe/restaurant - crayons and colouring pads provided!

A Day at the Farm. Located on the south side of Dartmoor near Totnes, Pennywell Farm is a great day out with lots of activities and animals to get to know. See www.pennywellfarm.co.uk  Alternatively, in a beautiful setting near Moretonhampstead there is the miniature pony centre which offers pony rides, falconry displays, farm animals and several play areas. It doesn't ever seem to get too crowded here, so nice and relaxing for parents too - our children love it! www.miniatureponycentre.com Or for more exotic animals try the award winning Dartmoor Zoological Park www.dartmoorzoo.org on the south west edge of dartmoor.

A 'car free' day! There is plenty to do on the doorstep - take the coastal path for a 15 minute walk to Challaborough and have a swim or make a pebble sculpture on the beach. Walking on the south west coastal path in the other direction, you can take the little ferry across the Avon to get across to Bantham dunes and Beach (May to Sept 01548 561196). Hike up to the Huer's hut on Burgh Island, walking over the causeway at low tide, taking the eccentric sea tractor at high tide. Have a surf lesson at Discovery surf school on Bigbury beach (07813 639622 or www.discoverysurf.com). Or just have a picnic, fly a kite or go rockpooling!
